Madrid, Madrid, here we come! Pope’s Message for JMJ 2011

“…we are looking forward to the next World Youth Day, to be held in Madrid in August 2011. … Now, at a time when Europe greatly needs to rediscover its Christian roots, our meeting will take place in Madrid with the theme: “Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith” (cf. Col 2:7). I encourage you to take part in this event, which is so important for the Church in Europe and for the universal Church. I would like all young people – those who share our faith in Jesus Christ, but also those who are wavering or uncertain, or who do not believe in him – to share this experience, which can prove decisive for their lives. It is an experience of the Lord Jesus, risen and alive, and of his love for each of us,” said the Holy Father in his Message for the 26th World Youth Day

LET US PRAY A LOT for those participating in the WYD in Madrid, as well as for all those youths who, from their countries, will be one in spirit with them, to celebrate this wonderful time to deepen in one’s relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ!

08/15/2011, Monday
Arrival in Madrid
On the 15th, in the afternoon, pilgrims arrive in Madrid.

Daily:

Youth Festival
Aside from the WYD main events, many different activities will take place throughout the day as part of the Cultural Program. The program will include concerts, exhibits, guided museum visits, plays, and much, much more. The complete list of activities will be announced later, when all proposals have been received and processed.

08/16/2011, Tuesday (tentative)
8:00 am
Arrival at Madrid
From the early morning, the pilgrims and groups registered in WYD will be able to collect their accreditation and backpacks in the places indicated by the organization.

7:00 pm
WYD Opening Mass
World Youth Day begins at 7 pm (provisional time) with a Mass in Madrid´s Cibeles Square, presided over by the archbishop of Madrid and concelebrated by the bishops and priests participating in WYD.

08/17/2011, Wednesday (tentative)
10:00 am
Catechesis sessions
WYD participants, organized by language groups, will have catechesis session with bishops from all over the world. The sessions will take place in churches, schools, auditoriums and sports centers of Madrid.

Papal Welcome
The participants will receive the Pope at Plaza de Cibeles.

Via crucis
Statues from traditional Spanish Holy Week celebrations will be used to illustrate each station of the cross. The statues come from all over Spain.

08/20/2011, Saturday – VIGIL
4:00 pm
Preparatory ceremony in Cuatro Vientos
Young people will arrive little by little at the aerodrome and take their places. Meanwhile, different activities will take place on the stage (testimonies of young people, musical interpretations, prayers to the Virgin, etc.), to prepare for the Vigil.

8:00 pm (time is tentative)
Vigil with the Pope at Cuatro Vientos
The Pope arrives at the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome, and Eucharistic adoration will begin. An address is planned by the Holy Father.

11:00 pm
Overnight Vigil at Cuatro Vientos
WYD participants will spend the night in the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome. For those participating, there will be several tents for the adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

08/21/2011, Sunday – Send-off Mass
9:00 am (time is tentative)

The Pope will concelebrate Mass with thousands of bishops and priests, and he will address young people (and those not so young), to send them out to the world to witness to their faith, as the Lord did with his Apostles. At the end of the concluding Mass, the Holy Father will announce the place where the next World Youth Day (outside Rome) will be held.

The official JMJ Madrid 2011 website indicates that the Theme of this WYD is “Planted and built up in Christ, Firm in the Faith (St. Paul)”  The Bible passage is 1 Cor 16: 13 “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”

A commentary on this and other similar ‘call to fortitude and vigilance’ passages found in the Navarre Bible is as follows:

• “In the preaching of Christ and of the Apostles we are frequently exhorted to be watchful (cf. Mt 24:42; 25:13; Mk 14:34)—for one thing, because the enemy is always on the prowl (cf. 1 Pet 5:8), and also because a person in love is always awake (cf. Songs 5:2). This watchfulness expresses itself in a spirit of prayer (cf. Lk 21:36; 1 Pet 4:7) and fortitude in faith (cf. 1 Cor 16:13).”

Let’s all learn the JMJ Madrid 2011 Theme Song and ask for the grace so that we may be firm in the faith!
