Dora del Hoyo Alonso was born 11 January 1914, in Boca de Huérgano (León, Spain). Her parents, exemplary Christians, educated here from young so that she could be a good daughter of God.

In Bilbao, on 14 March 1946, she asked admission to Opus Dei. From the first moment, she knew how to correspond to the Divine call with fidelity. The following stood out in her: Eucharistic devotion —the Holy Mass was the center and root of her interior life—, a tender love for the Most Holy Virgin and to St Joseph, and a trusting recourse to her Guardian Angel. On 27 December 1946, by invitation of St Josemaría, she moved to Rome, where she lived until the end of her life.

She knew how to discover the sanctifying value and apostolic meaning of everything that lies hidden in every apparently trivial act: she balanced spirit of service with professional competence. From Rome, she collaborated in the formation of women from all over the world, and contributed to the apostolic work of Opus Dei in all the environments of society.

She died on 10 January 2004. Her mortal remains lie at the Crypt of the Prelatic Church of Holy Mary of Peace, Viale Bruno Buozzi, 75, Rome.

Dora was one of the first 3 Assistant Numeraries to arrive in Rome on December 27, 1946 to give support to the Founder. Along with Julia Bustillo and Rosalia Lopez (Assistant Numeraries) as well as Encarnita Ortega and Dorita Calvo (Numeraries), she suffered –and offered up cheerfully– severe deprivation, given the lack of means during those Roman times…

Here’s an interesting Forum thread on Assistant Numeraries.
